Here’s a bite-size Healthy Living Tip on how you can increase your energy with the right foods.
Fuel up wisely. A muffin and orange juice from the coffee shop delivers plenty of calories, but your body tends to metabolize them quickly. What that means is that you get a rush of sugar dumped into your bloodstream followed by the dreaded crash. This leaves you feeling sluggish, and you repeat the cycle – maybe grabbing a candy bar as your energy slumps midday.
You’ll maintain a steadier energy level by eating lean protein and unrefined carbohydrates.
Some breakfast options to eat instead:
- Plain Greek yogurt with a sprinkling of nuts and fresh berries
- Scrambled or hard boiled eggs and a serving of steel cut oats
Your body will digest the carb-fiber-protein mix more gradually, helping to give you sustained energy.
Don’t skip meals, either. Your body needs a certain number of calories to get through the day. It’s better to space your meals out so your body gets the nourishment it needs all through the day, which will also help keep your blood sugar balanced.
