The holiday season can be fun and joyous, and it can also be stressful.

This time of year it can be so easy to get caught up in taking care of everyone and everything- children, parents, buying gifts, planning meals- that we forget to take care of ourselves.

It’s important to remember during the holiday season and beyond that in order to care for others, we need to take care of ourselves. Many of my clients tell me that they don’t want to appear selfish. My mantra: Self-care is not selfish. It is Self-consideration.

Wondering how you can practice self-care amidst the hustle and bustle of a busy holiday season?

Here are four self-care tips, just in time for the holidays.

Be present. When you find yourself worrying about the perfect gift to buy, what you’re going to wear to the office get- together, or how clean your house needs to be for your guests, take a moment. Invite yourself into the present.

“Realize deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus of your life.” – Eckhart Tolle

Be aware. Stress can show up as aches and pains. Are you experiencing muscle pain and tightness, headaches, or an upset stomach regularly?  Using the breathe is a great way to release stress and serves as a reminder to be present.  Inhale deeply through your nose and use your exhale to release your tension and relax your entire body. This exercise takes only seconds and can stop stress in its tracks.

“There’s no limit to what working with the breath can accomplish…my own first-hand experiences with this natural healing method have convinced me that breathing well may be the master key to good health. I recommend breath work to all my patients.” -Andrew Weil, M.D.

Be happy. The holiday season is the time of year to count your blessings, and show the most-important people in your life that you care about them – this includes YOU!!

“Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.” -Hamilton Wright Mabie

Be consistent. Maintain your self-care (Yoga, meditation, Reiki, exercise, eating healthy, etc.) throughout the holiday season. Don’t have a routine in place? There is no time like the present!

“Nourishing yourself in a way that helps you blossom in the direction you want to go is attainable, and you are worth the effort.” – Deborah Day
