Whether your goal is to lose weight or eat healthier this season, now is the time to Spring clean your diet with these six tips.

1. Limit Added Sugar

It’s important to limit your sugar intake, particularly sugars that are added  to many processed foods by food manufacturers.  This is important, not only for your waistline, but also for your overall health. Consuming too much added sugar can contribute to health problems such as weight gain and obesity, type 2 diabetes, chronic inflammation and heart disease.

2. Read Labels

All packaged foods come with a nutrition label meant to provide you with the information necessary to know exactly what you’re eating. Understanding what’s in the foods you eat helps you be more aware so that you can make healthier choices. Checking food labels also makes it easy for you to compare the nutrient content of different options.

3. Limit Processed Foods

Heavily processed and junk foods —such as white breads, pastas, rice, soda, cookies, and cakes —often contain added sugar, a fast-acting carbohydrate that can quickly spike insulin levels. They also tend to contain refined, rather than whole, grains and so they lack the nutrients and fiber that slows down the body’s breakdown of carbohydrates, which also causes blood sugar and insulin levels to spike. A double whammy!!

4. Swap Out Unhealthy Processed Foods

Set yourself up for success by making sure that you have more healthy, whole foods available, including vegetables, fruits, lean protein, whole grains and heart healthy fat.

5. Cook More

Quick fixes like fast food and ordering take-out may be convenient, but they’re not always good for you. Give your diet the spring cleaning it deserves by cooking healthier meals. You may find these foods leave you feeling less bloated and more energized than fast food or restaurant meals.

6. Start Small

Listen, I know change is hard, but it will be harder the longer that you put it off.

Remember, you don’t have to make big changes to your diet to see a positive impact. Every little change helps. Make a commitment to your health by doing one thing on this list today.

Be patient and allow yourself to make small changes, one step at a time.
