Do you rush through meals? Are you on a restrictive diet that makes meal time stressful? You can change your relationship with food with mindful eating.

MINDFUL EATING

It’s important that we shift the focus from fear, restriction, and calorie-counting, and practicing mindful eating can help. The more awareness we have while eating, the more present we become. We can then regard our food as a source of nourishment to be savored.

It takes twenty minutes for our brain to get the message that we are full. When we take the time to eat mindfully, we naturally tune in to our body’s fullness and hunger cues, and we naturally stop eating when we are satisfied.

Here are some tips so that you can begin to practice mindful eating.

We eat for two reasons, hunger and emotions. Before eating, ask yourself, “Am I really hungry?”

Put your fork down in between bites.

Be mindful of your food choices – focus on eating natural, whole foods, instead of processed foods.

Put your electronic devices away and shut the television off. Eat without distractions so all of your attention is focused on your meal.

Savor your food. Pay attention to the aromas, flavors, and textures of food.

Be mindful of judgement. Don’t label foods as “good” or “bad”. Instead, ask yourself if they will serve your health.

Stop counting calories and focus on how you are feeling after eating.

Be mindful of following the latest fad diet. What works for one may not work for you. Tune in and figure out a way of eating that serves your unique body and constitution.
